Becoming Avid Readers
In this reading unit, the children will learn that avid readers are people who love reading so much they can hardly bear to stop reading. They read not just during reading workshop but at home, too and all day long! The children will increase their reading independence in this unit. They will continue to be immersed in the wide world of books and reading - storybooks, information books, poetry, and songs. The children will continue to learn ways to socialize around books through working with clubmates who are within their zone of proximal development, and by having many opportunities to read together and to share favorite books with each other. They will be a part of a community that together reads poems, songs, and books and has extended conversations about these, developing looking, and listening, and thinking skills in the process.
Bend I: (Becoming an Avid Reader). This bend rallies children to explore what avid readers do. This bend focuses on reading fictional stories and on thinking about characters, settings, and plot. The children will organize playdates and create their own superpowers charts geared toward self-selected goals.
Bend II: (Learning from All About Books) This bend parallels the work of Bend 1; however, here children will become avid readers of nonfiction texts.
Bend III: (Falling in Love with Poetry) This bend has a celebratory feel as students play with rhyme and rhythm, innovate upon existing poems, all while developing their fluency.
