In this writing unit, the children will learn they can write to make their classroom, their school, and their world into a better place. The students will learn that they are writing a particular type of texts for specific audiences. In this unit, the children will develop their writing skills to meet and exceed the Common Core Standards for Kindergarten. In this unit, children will do lots of persuasive writing. Bend I: (Exploring Opinion Writing: Making Our School a Better Place)In this bend, the children will look at the world around them in new ways - seeing not just what is, but what could be. The students will reflect on the troubles they see around the classroom and school and think, "What could make things better?" and to then do all kinds of writing to help make a change. Bend II: (Sending Our Words Out Into the World: Writing Letters to Make a Change)The students will write lots of persuasive letter in this bend. In this section, the students will focus on changing things to make their neighborhood better. Bend III: (Persuasive Writing Projects)The students will join in a whole class pursuit, possibly around a more global cause such as protecting the planet. The children will be encouraged to write in a variety of genres, focusing on convincing others to "go green".
